Former Leicester manager Shakespeare passes away at 60

Ex-Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare has passed away at 60, his family confirmed.

Shakespeare had been receiving cancer treatment since October 2023.

“In addition to managing Leicester, he also worked with West Brom, Hull, Everton, Watford, Aston Villa, and Norwich, and served as England’s assistant manager in 2016.

A statement from his family, shared through the League Managers’ Association, stated that Shakespeare ‘passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones.’

The statement 7m continued: “Although the family takes great pride in his footballing accomplishments as a player and coach, to us, he will always be remembered foremost as a loving husband, father, son, brother, and uncle.”

“The loss is deeply devastating to us all, and we kindly request privacy during this extremely difficult time as we come to terms with and mourn the passing of a very special person.”

“The family would like to express their gratitude for the numerous prayers and well-wishes received over the past few challenging months. Although we were unable to respond to each message, every one was deeply appreciated by Craig and the family.”

Shakespeare served as Claudio Ranieri’s assistant during the 2015-16 season when Leicester achieved one of football’s most remarkable triumphs by winning the Premier League.

He succeeded Ranieri as manager in February 2017, and although he was given a permanent three-year contract in June, he was dismissed in October.

Shakespeare’s most recent position was as Leicester’s assistant manager again in April 2023 under Dean Smith, but he departed after their relegation from the Premier League the next month.

As a midfielder in his playing career, he played for Walsall, Sheffield Wednesday, West Brom, Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Telford, and Hednesford.

Former Leicester manager Nigel Pearson, who collaborated with Shakespeare at five different clubs, stated, “It’s hard to express the profound sadness that I, and everyone who knew or worked with Craig, feel upon hearing such devastating news.”

“He is considered one of the most talented, calm, and stable players in all ball handling situations. I am honored to be his teammate in every match. Safe journey to your next destination, my dear friend.

“You are loved and admired by all of us, and every time we think of you, a smile, smirk, chuckle, or fond memory will come to mind. We are truly fortunate to have known ‘Shakey’.

Shakespeare served as England’s assistant manager during Sam Allardyce’s brief tenure, which included a 1-0 victory over Slovakia in September 2016.

The England national team’s social media account posted: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Three Lions coach Craig Shakespeare at the age of 60.”

“Our thoughts are with Craig’s family and friends during this time.”

A statement from the Foxes remarked that Shakespeare “leaves behind a legacy at Leicester City unlike any other.”

The players shared: “We are very honored to be led by a genius coach, he is someone who shares his experiences and playing techniques, and is also an inspiration to the players”

“Craig was more than just a staff member; he was a beloved member of the Leicester City family. His warmth, kindness, and sincere concern for others won the affection of everyone he met.

“His absence will be profoundly felt by the many friends he made at Leicester City and beyond. Supporters, colleagues, and friends will always remember the profound impact Craig had on the football club and its people.”
